Passing Phrase - www.learnhebrew.org.il

Chevrat Bat

Literally: A company that is a daughter (huh?)
Idiomatically: Subsidiary

"Chevrah" is translated as an organization or company. Of course it stems from the word "chaver" which we normally translate as friend, but in the Bible (Job 34:8) and Talmud, we find it used to describe a group of people partnered in study or work (Ta'anit 7a). It is also used today to mean a "member" such as of a club or of a parliament.

"Hamifal hikimah chevrat bat beArtsot Habrit."

The factory set up a subsidiary in the United States.

Good luck to them!
