Literally: On the greater (side)
Idiomatically: Just the opposite / on the contrary This word is the Aramaic (Shabbat 122b) equivalent of the word "lehefech" .להפך It breaks down as follows: "A"=on "De"= that "Raba"=greater. Meaning something that is greater than what you thought. Sometimes it is doubled as in "Aderaba Ve'aderaba" אדרבה ואדרבה. Which would translate as "the exact opposite." While discussing the possibility of investigating the senior political figure and his denial of any improprieties one paper wrote:
אם לא היה כלום, אדרבא לחקור
If there was "nothing," then how much more so you should investigate. There is a popular song especially in the religious world sung by Avraham Fried words by rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk (1717-1786), music by Yoseph Green .
