Dibarnu Al Hachamor |

Literally: We were speaking about the donkey
Idiomatically: Speaking of the devil… If you walk into a room and two acquaintances look up at you while one says "dibarnu al hachamor," don't get insulted too quickly. The word, "chamor" (donkey) can have negative connotations when applied to a person as it does in English. However when used in this phrase, it takes on the meaning of "Oh – we were just mentioning you and here you walked in." On the other hand, if these two people are really not your friends, then figure they did really call you a donkey and take it from there. |
